Ways for GROUPS to Help this Christmas

Do you have a group? It can be a youth group, church group, school organization, ladies bunco group, neighborhood or just a few like-minded friends. Gather them up and give them these idea for volunteering this Christmas:

Ring the Bells! Groups such as the Kiwanis Club, Fayetteville Observer and Embarq employees have been choosing a day and ringing the bells at the Salvation Army Kettle at Cross Creek Mall for years now. Groups via for the coveted bell trophies given out for most donations in a single day. Why not be a part of this friendly competition and get everyone on board in your group! Simply choose a date, call us to see if it's still available (483-8119) and plan your strategy! Plan to have volunteers on hand from 10am until 9pm on your day. Encourage your group to dress up for the occassion, ham it up by singing a Christmas carols, offer candy canes to kids, etc. The more fun you make it, the more donations you will receive!
Host a Drive! Toys and food are ALWAYS needed this time of year! Brainstorm ideas to collect items to donate. Last year, a local golf course community incorporated a canned food drive into a golf cart parade led by Santa. They place boxes around the neighborhood and put out flyers encouraging neighbors to donate. Be creative! A local Girl Scout troop solicited by asking friends and neighbors to donate ONE single can of food each. How many people do you think donated JUST one can? Not many!
Carol for Donations! Some very special people have a tradition of caroling for donations for The Salvation Army in their neighborhood. The Sky Drive and Summertime Road Gang choose a date each year and let their neighbors know what date they will be caroling. Their neighbors can signal that they'd like to be serenaded (and donate) by leaving on their porch light. Last year, this group raised nearly $40,000 in a single evening!

Ways to Help The Salvation Army this Christmas!

There are many ways an individual can help The Salvation Army help others this Christmas. Here are a few of the INDIVIDUAL ways you can help:

Host a Food or Toy Drive - It's fairly simple, really. Grab a box (or two or three), wrap it nicely in Christmas wrapping paper (not required, but it sure will get people in the holiday mood), and place a sign on it large enough for people to read it. For example : TOY DRIVE FOR THE SALVATION ARMY. Please place new, unused toys in this box that will be given out to needy children who don't get adopted from The Salvation Army Angel Tree. Get the toys to us by Dec. 14th!

Food donated is used in our Food Pantry and is given to those in need.
Toys donated will be used for children who do not get adopted from the Angel Tree.

Ring the Bell at a Kettle - We have kettle locations (TBA) all over our area, so pick a date and commit to ringing the bell at a location. All that is required is a cheerful demeanor! Hours available for individuals: Friday and Saturdays from 1-3pm

Volunteer in our Christmas Warehouse - We will be packing gifts from Dec. 16 - 19 at our Christmas Warehouse! Come join in the fun and see how it all works!

It's Christmas time again! Not really, but to us at The Salvation Army the rush is already beginning! We need many elves to make sure we can provide Christmas to all who are in need this year!

Oct. 19 - 23 and 26 - 30
We will be taking applications for Christmas Assistance (ie. Angel Tree program)

We need volunteers to help with applications from 8:30am - 11:30am and 11am - 1:30pm
Requirements:

Legible handwriting
Empathy for others
Cheerful demeanor!

Think you can help? We need LOTS of helpers (10 per day to start with!)

If the veggies cannot be used in the next day or so, they are given away to people in need right here in our community.

Krispy Kreme Partnering with Salvation Army for National Doughnut Day!

Stop by the Fayetteville Krispy Kreme location this Friday, May 5th and get a free doughnut of your choice to celebrate National Doughnut Day! While you're there, put some change into The Salvation Army Red Kettle for Kids 2 Kamp.

KIDS HELPING KIDS

Kids are invited to help The Salvation Army raise money to send local disadvantaged children to camp as well help defray the costs of our summer day camp program. Our kettles, which are traditionally seen only during the holidays are making their summertime debut to help raise money for our Kids 2 Kamp program.

Kick Off Meeting and pick up of Kettles
Saturday, June 13th from 8am until 10am
The Salvation Army Community Center, 220 E. Russell St.
Join us for Krispy Kreme doughnuts and juice as we kick off this
one week fundraiser!

Each participating child receives :
□ One kettle to collect donations…get creative! Ask family and friends, ask a store for permission to set up for a few hours, host a lemonade stand or yard sale! (Please have an adult with you at all time!)
□ One ID badge “Salvation Army Kids Helping Kids Official Fundraiser”
□ Information explaining The Salvation Army Kids 2 Kamp program
□ Ideas to help you collect the most money for the cause!

Our Pantry is Nearly Bare!

I should have taken a picture to show the sharp contrast in our pantry right after Christmas and our pantry now...BIG difference! Our shelves are VERY bare and the need is so great right now. If you or your organization is looking for a project, even a small one, a food drive would be a great way to help out your local Salvation Army!

Greatest needs:

Canned meats (Spam, tuna, Vienna Sausages, Ravioli, Soups, etc)
Boxed mixes that ONLY REQUIRE WATER (remember, many mixes require milk, butter, etc. ...the less that is required, the better for those in need).
Dried beans and Pastas

Garden Project in Progress!

We're so happy to say that our shelter's gardening project is underway! We had a team of folks come out this past weekend and get our beds started. With hammers, nails, screws, shovels and even a small tiller, we were able to begin what looks to be a promising garden at the homeless shelter.

Thanks to Yolanda and the folks she got to come out from Fort Bragg to help get things started. We even had some of the shelter residents join in the fun (and work) of building the raised beds.

This week we hope to get the compost delivered to the site and get to planting by the weekend. Thanks to all who helped with the building of the beds!

For those of you looking for a project...be it community service for a high school class, girl scout troop project, church group, etc. HAVE WE GOT ONE FOR YOU!!!

Taking a look at our pantry this morning, it looked, well....sad. It's getting depleted more and more everyday. The great stock we had after the holidays has dwindled and now we have got to restock. People are in need more than ever and we need your help!

Here is a list of items that are tops on our list:

CANNED MEATS (chicken, tuna, spam, etc.)
CANNED RAVOLI (Chef Boyardee type stuff)
RICE MIXES/ MAC AND CHEESE that can be made by JUST ADDING WATER (remember milk is expensive)
CANNED SOUPS (family-sized cans are more economical)

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon News

Thanks to all who attended our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon last week. We thanked those who helped us during Christmas especially. We could not have provided Christmas for the over 2,000 children and nearly 300 seniors this past year without the support of our community. Awards given during the luncheon include:

Volunteer of the Year- Larry Smith, founder of Larry's Kids. Larry has dedicated a great deal of his time and efforts into making sure kids in our community have a wonderful Christmas for the past 13 years. From personally helping to shop for the kids to coordinating a big party to give away the gifts, this DJ for country station WKML has a HUGE heart of gold!
Angel Tree of the Year - So Chic Bebe (pictured above). The ladies at So Chic Bebe downtown on Hay Street were outstanding examples of going all out for the cause. They embraced our 1st Annual Angel Tree program and their customers made a big difference by adopting many, many angels this past year.
Christmas Partner of the Year - Cross Creek Mall. Speaking of Angel Trees...where would we be without the original Angel Tree location at the mall? Cross Creek Mall is so good to The Salvation Army...allowing us to set up every year and make Christmas possibly for so many unfortunate families!
Community Partner of the Year - Family Foods, Inc. Ron and Sharon Matthews open their hearts all year long. Specifically this year, they donated an entire Taco Bell restaurant of furniture and fixtures for us to make a "Cafe" for the youngsters in our afterschool and summer programs. The Cafe is a work in progress, but Family Food's generous gift has been a wonderful addition!

Garden Project...Coming Along

Just wanted to quickly update those who have been patiently waiting for our shelter garden to hit the ground. We are moving forward in the right directions. We currently have:

Man power to build the raised beds
Compost to fill the beds
plants to place in the beds

....Now all we need is something to make the raised beds with! We had some old wood that was going to be donated, but turns out it won't work for this project. So, we've asked around and we're waiting on a few other options to get back to us.

No worries, though! We do have plenty of time to get this ready. We can't plant for another month. Our gardening experts tell us that historically there is a hard freeze around the middle of April...so our planting should not be done before this.

Salvation Army Social Service Office

Our Social Service office is located just one block away from our Corps office and Community Building. Just one block off of Russell Street at 226 S. Cool Springs Street is where you'll find help if you are in a crisis situation. Beginning Monday, Feb. 9, we have changed our hours to Monday through Friday 8am until 8pm to better serve our community during these hard economic times.

You can receive help with your past due:

Electric/ Gas bill
Rent
Food...we have a food pantry for those in need
Clothing/Shoes

Please come to our office and bring the following with you to see if we can help:

Picture ID
Social Security cards and/or birth certificates for all in household
Bills you pay each month
Income proof

Homeless Shelter and Love Lunch Facility

The Salvation Army of Fayetteville offers a shelter for those who find themselves homeless. Located at 245 Alexander Street in downtown Fayetteville, the shelter also serves as the Love Lunch facility.

A Love Lunch is provided, free of charge, to any who find themselves in need of a good meal at noon daily. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. Volunteers from area schools, churches and organizations help to prepare and serve the meal.

The shelter opens at 4pm daily and is open to anyone in need. Upon entering the shelter, a person must provide identification and a cleared background check (provided free of charge at the Fayetteville Police Department 2 blocks away, and open 24 hrs). Clients are given assistance in job searching, mental health, referrals for food stamps and other assistance through the Department of Social Services.

This is our Corps Chapel, which is attached to our Administrative offices and our Community Center.
